First Bremen Conference on Language and Literature in Colonial and Postcolonial Contexts

First Bremen Conference on Language and Literature in Colonial and Postcolonial Contexts (BCLL #1):

The conference explores the entire range of phenomena which connect language to colonialism and postcolonialism. The major goal of the conference is to bring together scholars of different academic backgrounds to exchange their ideas on the relationship of language and colonialism/postcolonialism – a combination of categories which need to be better understood by way of studying them as closely as possible from as many perspectives as possible. Hitherto, research dedicated to these issues has been conducted largely within the confines of disciplines within the humanities which do not normally cooperate closely. Thus, our conference is meant to initiate a new interdisciplinary research program that investigates how language is affected by colonial and postcolonial conditions and how colonial and postcolonial constellations of facts are reflected, shaped and negotiated by language. Linguistics, cultural studies, anthropology, history, political science and other disciplines are invited to contribute to this project.
